5 Truths About My Personal Relationship With Adoption

Before I start this post I want to say I adore my parents who adopted me and the family I have. They are amazing and I am lucky they decided to choose me to have in their life.

I also understand my birth mother gave me up for the right reason, that she did it for my good.

However, with my adoption came a lot of issues.

I feel like there is some taboo about speaking about adoption from birth and it causing issues.

There is this assumption that because you don’t have the memories of that time, it shouldn’t cause problems later in life.

I 100% disagree with this theory.

These are just some of the truths about my personal relationship with adoption.

I Believed for a Long Time I was Unwanted.

There are many reasons behind this, I couldn’t understand if children were the most precious thing why someone would give one up.

Of course, now I know they did it for love, for the best. But back then my mind couldn’t understand that.

I always bottled things up, I was scared if I spoke how I felt with these things I would be “got rid of again”.

I remember even as a young child worrying about when my parents would have enough of me and give me up. Just like the person who gave me up did.

It Is Part of The Reason I Have Mental Health Issues.

I am not bold enough to say it is the ONLY reason, I am pretty sure that there are other things that helps impact this.

However, I do believe that it had some part of them.

I Felt Lost With Part of Me.

Where did I come from?

Where did those random quirks come from?

Why did I love to swim when neither of my parents did?

If I Didn’t Know Better I Would Think She Was Yours.

Someone said it many years ago, I heard it and it stayed with me.

Was it a good thing or a bad thing?

Who’s was I?

Confusion.

Adoption most of all left me confused.

Who was I? Where was I from? What were my birth parents like?

Do I take after them?

What is from nature and what is from nurture?

I guess you could say my truths about adoption aren’t’ always happy, yes I have an amazing family I wouldn’t change for the world.

But it did in some ways leave me mixed up and confused.

Adoption is a complex thing for both adoptee and adopter.
