7 Parts Of The Home Everyone Forgets To Clean

May is nearly over, but it’s not too late to organise a Spring clean. This could be the perfect opportunity to clean those areas of your home that rarely ever get touched with a cloth. While keeping clean some of these areas may not seem like a big issue, it could be vital for keeping on top of indoor dust levels and fending off pests. Below are some of the areas that could be worth considering it.

The tops of kitchen cabinets

Tops of kitchen cabinets can often gather dust over time and even grease from smoke or mould as a result of moisture. They’re also a common place for spiders to build cobwebs. Consider getting a step ladder out and cleaning these surfaces.. 

Door handles and light switches

You touch handles and light switches every day. But how often do you clean them? Wiping them down could help ensure that they don’t become germ magnets. Make sure to also clean other small fixtures that are regularly touched such as taps, flushes, thermostats and railings.

The inside of your microwave

Grime can accumulate on the inside surfaces of your microwave while cooking foods. This can end up contaminating other foods if you don’t clean it away regularly. There are a few different techniques for cleaning a microwave. One of the most reliable methods is to use white vinegar, which is great at removing stubborn grease. 

Behind fixtures and furniture

When was the last time you pulled out your bed or sofa and cleaned behind? What about behind kitchen appliances like your dryer or refrigerator? These are common places for dust, mould and pests to thrive, so consider pulling these out and cleaning behind them once per year. Make sure to also clean behind permanent fixtures like sinks and toilets. 

Light fittings and lamp shades

Many of us forget to look up when cleaning, which can result in ceiling lights gathering dust and cobwebs. Get on a step ladder and give these a clean with a feather duster or wet cloth. Also consider lamp shades on table lamps and floor lamps, as these can often go ignored.

The exterior of your home

Many of us regularly clean the interior of our homes, but rarely clean the exterior. This includes the front door, the outside of windows, brickwork and roofing. A lot of these areas can be hard and even dangerous to access, so you may want to consider hiring exterior cleaning services. This is particularly recommended when cleaning sloped roofs and high windows.

Extraction fan vents can get dusty and full of cobwebs if you don’t take the time to clean them now and again. This can reduce their effectiveness when you turn them on and even cause damage. If you have air conditioning installed in your home, keeping vents clean can be particularly important for maintaining clean air quality – fail to clean vents and you’ll end up pumping dirty air around your home.
