How to Design and Stock Your New Kitchen

Whether you’ve just moved into a new home and want to put your stamp on it, or it’s been a while since you’ve renovated your home and it’s time for an update, a kitchen remodel is the best way to level up your home.

The kitchen is the beating heart and hungry stomach of your home, and it needs to be both functional and beautiful, especially if you love cooking and spend a lot of time in there. So, how can you take it to the next level?

The most extreme option is to rip out your existing kitchen and build a new one in its place. New kitchens can be designed with your needs in mind, so this is a great option if you want to completely change your kitchen.

You can change the layout of your kitchen as well, although this will involve getting electricians and plumbers involved if you’re moving large appliances and outlets. A plumber can make sure that your kitchen is perfectly functional and doesn’t have any other issues.

This is the best option if the kitchen is severely outdated, damaged, or just badly designed. A bad kitchen design is frustrating at best and actively dangerous at its worst.

Quick DIY Fixes

However, there are also some ways to update your kitchen without making any major changes. If you mostly like how your kitchen is, or the only issue you have is with aesthetics, then you can make some tweaks.

Painting the walls and potentially changing the tiles or adding backsplashes will have a huge difference on the colour scheme of your kitchen. You can use bright, neutral colours to lighten the room, or you can add some character with a bold feature wall.

You can change the cupboard doors and handles for a surprisingly significant change, without having a large cost. This can add some new character to your kitchen and make it feel like your own.

Stocking Your Kitchen

Whether you keep your old appliances or get new ones, another thing to consider is how to stock your kitchen. If you’ve just moved out and don’t have a lot of stuff or have never lived alone before, this can be daunting.

Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to stock a kitchen so you have everything you need and, ideally, minimal clutter.

You should start with a knife set and some chopping boards, as you will always need these items. A couple of roasting trays will come in handy, as will a frying pan and a few saucepans. Make sure that you scale your items according to your needs, so this means thinking about your family and your cooking habits.

Small appliances can be easier to use and more efficient than an oven, especially if you live alone. An air fryer can effectively replace a convection oven and cook small meals and single portions, and a microwave oven is every reheater’s best friend. Instant pots and slow cookers can also be very handy.
