How To Prepare Your Garden For Winter

With Autumn in full flow and Winter fast approaching, it’s time to start prepping your garden. This isn’t just for the sake of keeping it neat and tidy. Making sure your garden is ready for winter is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your property.

Looking around your garden in autumn can make you think that the clean-up will be a never-ending job. So, you’ll be happy to know that these simple tasks won’t take up much longer than a weekend. Take a look.

Clean Up Debris

This is arguably the hardest job at this time of year. You’ll never stop the leaves from blowing so your garden will never be perfect but it is important to pick up what you can. Raking the leaves to one side so the rest of your garden is visible will help you to see the jobs that need to be done.

For instance, if you have any fruit trees or plants in your garden, you’ll need to pick up any fallen fruit so your garden doesn’t attract rodents. Bag up as much of the debris as you can so a strong wind doesn’t blow it back through.

Pressure Wash

Whether you’ve got a lawn or patio, a pressure washer is a great investment. If you need an outside tap installed to make use of a jet wash, contact local plumbers. An outdoor tap is a lifesaver during garden clean-ups.

Using a pressure washer is often the best way to clear debris and remove stains or dirt and grime. Keeping the patio clean can also help to extend its life expectancy and keep it from cracking.

Fertilise Your Lawn

If your lawn is the centrepiece in your garden, don’t forget about it during the winter. Unfortunately, most people leave gardening for spring and summer and neglect important jobs in harsher weather conditions. As the cold sets in, your lawn will need nourishment to survive.

A high phosphorus fertiliser will provide what your lawn needs in preparation for spring and attract the right wildlife. If you’ve ever wondered why your lawn looks drab when spring rolls around, you may not be feeding it well.

Tuck Your Plants In

Some plants need a layer of extra protection when the cold arrives. Ice is a killer so it’s vital that your plants are tucked in before winter. You can use compost to tuck your plants in by adding more around the plant- almost as if putting a scarf around it.

You can also give your plants some added nutrients to ensure they also have the food they need to survive the colder months and jump back up during spring.

Drain Your Hose

If you’re using a hose with an outdoor tap to keep your garden clean, make sure you always wrap it up and hang it away. If you leave it out and you haven’t drained it, it could easily freeze and you’ll need to purchase a new one.
