Why Every Household Should Have An Emergency Fund

Does your household have an emergency fund to fall back on? If not, you should think about putting one together. It’ll help you take control of your finances and stay on top of life’s twists and turns. Here’s how a fund like this will help you.

You May Have to Make a Sudden and Expensive Purchase

Car broke down or was involved in a collision and is beyond fixing? Pipes burst in the house and now you’re dealing with your own mini flood? Need to see a private doctor about a health issue as soon as possible? An emergency fund will help you cover all of these.

Sudden and expensive purchases happen all the time, despite our inability to predict them, and without some emergency money stashed away, your finances could head into the red. You can try to load the purchase onto your credit card, but the more you do that, the further you’re going to sink into debt.

You Might Be Unable to Work

We don’t ever think of it as being a possibility, but we all have a chance of becoming ill and/or disabled one day. If this happens, it’s going to be hard to work for a living, even if you can do so from home in a remote position.

And whether this becomes a long term arrangement or is something you only have to do for a few months, your finances will be under strain. You can contact personal injury solicitors to see if you have a claim you can pursue, but until this is guaranteed, your emergency fund will be the one thing you can rely on.

If you have at least six months of income in your fund, you can relax a little and actually focus on your recovery. If you don’t have an emergency fund, you’re going to find it very hard to stay on top of your household bills, which is only going to add to your stress and potentially make you ill again.

You’ll Feel Much More Financially Secure

Let’s face it, trying to handle your finances can be hell! They can make you feel incredibly insecure about your financial wellness, and you might end up swearing off any non-essential purchase in the near future.

But if you have an emergency fund in place, you’re going to feel much more financially secure and stable. You won’t have to worry about accidents and emergencies hiding around every corner – you’ve got money available to deal with them!

Indeed, this can be the most motivating factor of all. If you find handling money a little bit stressful and prefer to never take a look at your bank account, knowing you’re sitting on a ‘nest egg’ will dispel the anxiety and make you feel much more confident.

Emergency funds are great for modern families. If you’ve got some cash in a secure account, and you can depend on it when you really need it, life won’t feel so hard.
