You may choose to inform family and friends that you are on a really tight budget and will limiting presents to only the children or your immediate family. However, a much more fun option is simple homemade gifts. Below you will find 10 ideas to get you started.

Simple Gifts from your Computer

1. Make your own certificates. Look through mail order catalogues or online for ideas. A simple one is, “This certifies that ____ is the BEST ___ there ever was.” or, “_____ is an official member of the ___ club. Member since___.” Be sure to place the certificate in a dollar store or salvaged frame.
2. Name in a frame. Use a fancy or calligraphy font and make large enough to fit on an 8 x10 piece of paper. Simply print, add embellishments and frame.
3. Create personalised note cards, stationery and envelopes. You can even place these items in a fancy box you made out of any salvaged box that you decorated with fabric and lace. Add a little spritz of perfume for a nice touch.
4. Create a mixed CD or a photo DVD. There are plenty of programs you can download for either of these items. You can even personalise a label. Place finished gift in a recycled decorated box.
5. Photo Calendar. You can even mark important dates on it for the person who always forgets.

Simple Sewing Gifts

1. Homemade Pillows. You don’t have to go out a and buy new fabric. Simply reuse material you already have. Recycle old sheets, blankets, t-shirts, dresses, curtains and blue jeans. You can even stuff the pillow with old t-shirts or socks.
2. Baby Bibs. Again reuse material you have just lying around the house. Options in addition to those listed above might include old table cloths or shower curtains.
3. Pot Holders. Cut (4) 8″ or 10″ squares of thick fabric and sew right sides together. Be sure to leave a small opening for turning. Turn and add a loop for hanging. Sew opening shut.
4. Patchwork Place Mats. Cut (12) 2″ x 2″ squares. Sew them together in a patchwork fashion. Cut a piece for the bottom in a contrasting or matching material. Sew top to bottom. Top stitch around the squares.
5. Heating Pads. Make these in squares, rectangles or tubes. Cut material and sew as you would a pillow. Be sure to leave opening for turning and filling. After turning fill with either dried beans, dried corn or rice. Sew opening closed.
