How To Be More Self-Sufficient

Do you often rely on other people to help you out in various situations? Or perhaps it’s not people but technology that gives you information and points you in the right direction (or, in some cases, actually does the work for you)? If that’s the case, you might feel it’s time to become a little more self-sufficient so that you can get stuff done even when there’s no one to help and so you can feel like you’re achieving more – even the smallest achievements add up and make you feel great. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you become more self-sufficient. Read on to find out more.

Install Solar Panels

Don’t worry; we’re not suggesting you install some solar panels on the roof of your house yourself – that’s what solar companies are for – but we are saying that the solar panels themselves can help you become a lot more self-sufficient and that’s a good thing for many reasons.

With solar panels installed, you’ll be able to use renewable energy from the sun rather than the fossil fuels like oil and gas you’re using now, and that’s fantastic for the environment, helping to make the planet a more sustainable place all around. However, it also means that personally, you won’t have to rely on the electricity networks anymore as you’ll be producing your own electricity, and on top of being more sustainable, you’ll save money, so it’s a good idea no matter what way you look at it.

Sustainable Gardening

Another great idea if you want to rely less on other people is to start sustainable gardening, which essentially means you’ll be growing your own food as much as possible. Yes, you might still need to top up your stores from the supermarket, but if you can grow as much as you can in your own back garden, you’ll be able to fend for yourself and not have to worry about the freshness or quality of the food you’re buying, and it won’t matter if the prices keep going up as they tend to do right now.

Even if you don’t have a back garden (or a front garden, come to that) or very much space at all, there are still ways you can grow your own produce. A balcony can still offer some room for a few vegetables, and a kitchen windowsill isn’t a bad place to grow useful herbs. Then there’s vertical gardening, which is ideal if you’ve not got a lot of ground space, but you’ve got walls and fences that could offer you a good place to grow things on.

Learn Some DIY Skills

When something breaks or goes wrong in your home, what do you do? You’ll usually have two options: you’ll either have to call someone to help you (either an expert or a friend or family member who’s good at DIY, depending on what the problem actually is), or you’ll have to fix the issue yourself. If you tend to do the former instead of the latter, you’re not being very self-sufficient, and that’s why it’s wise to learn some basic DIY skills – the more you know, the more you’ll be able to do yourself (that’s what DIY means, after all).

You don’t have to know everything, but a few useful skills around the house could include learning how to change light bulbs, rewire a plug, perhaps fix a leaking tap, or repaint a wall, and so on. The more you know, the less you’ll have to rely on anyone else, and that’s a good feeling.
