The Good Things About Camping

Camping, if done right, can truly be a positive experience. And to do camping right, means properly preparing for the trip.

One of the biggest positive attributes of camping is the feeling of connection.

Because there are few and sometimes no distractions, such as television, telephones and music or other noise making devices, people are forced to pay attention to one another more. And because camping requires working together, people tend to bond.

Imagine the feeling of sitting around a campfire, kicking back while munching on steak and potatoes and washing it down with a cold beer. Then, imagine doing so with someone you love sitting right there beside you, smiling and relaxing and just feeling good. There are few things better.

And because camping is outside and away from everything else, there exists on an almost constant basis, the perfect environment for deep, meaningful conversation; and of course the light kind too.

The point is because you are with whoever you go with, almost every second of every day you are out in the wilds camping together, the opportunity exists for talking on all levels and really re-connecting with those people in your life that you rarely ever get to talk to so easily.

Another positive attribute of camping comes about from the work that is involved in putting together a successful camping trip; from the picking and choosing where to go, to the planning of what to bring and deciding what to do while there.

If there are more than just one or two people, the planning process takes some work, but it also gives back in that it’s something that people that like one another enough to go camping together with, find fulfilling. It’s just a part of human nature to enjoy making something good happen together.

Also, another positive attribute of camping is the exposure to the environment. Not only is it pleasurable to walk around in nature enjoying it’s endless beauty, but it gives those who do so a sense of what’s at stake when people talk about preserving the environment.

Seeing first hand the simple elegance of nature and how delicate it is and how easily it can all be taken away is a to say the least disquieting.

And finally, one of the harder to define positive attributes of camping is the warm feeling of getting back to where you came from; the earth. Camping getting right in there with nature and our more primitive selves.

There is a reawakening and feeling of belonging that grows in you after a while. And it’s peaceful, and it feels right, and when you’re there, feeling that, it’s not something that will leave your mind any time soon after you’ve gone back to your regular life.

When I was a child I used to go camping every year with my parents. Nothing better than sitting out in nature eating bacon and eggs and enjoying the experience
